The “Kieran Mess Foundation” was set up in memory of our beloved son Kieran in March 2006.
Kieran was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour in 1999. After having major surgery in the same year he went on to receive 12 months of chemotherapy. Throughout the following years Kieran kept relatively good health and we as a family enjoyed lots of overseas trips and special days, sadly the symptoms returned in 2004 and it was diagnosed that there were cysts attached to the tumour mass, these in turn were causing pressure within the brain. Kieran underwent more operations to relieve the pressure.
In the latter part of 2004 the symptoms returned and after more scans it was decided that another major operation would need to take place. Unfortunately this operation didn’t go entirely to plan and it resulted in Kieran being left with a left side paralysis.
This disability did not stop Kieran from having his busiest year. Going to London, Disneyland Paris and Lapland as well as a helicopter ride over Glasgow.
During December 2005 Kieran’s health deteriorated and we took him back to Yorkhill for more scans. Unfortunately the scans confirmed that the tumour had grown back with a vengeance. The consultant instructed that there was nothing more they could do for him. The fight nearly over, we took Kieran home for palliative care.
Sadly he passed way on 10th Feb 2006 aged 10 and having fought a 7 year battle with cancer.
We decided to start up the foundation to raise funds that will go to helping other family’s faced with the devastating news just as we were. The funds will not go to medical assistance,but to provide them with much needed rest bite – holidays, trips abroad, mobility aids etc.
We work closely with CLIC Sargent and MACMILLAN Cancer Care for Children who provided exceptional help to us over the 7 years.
